HSV type 2 and occasionally type 1 produce significant neonatal and occasionally fatal disease. Maternal infection during pregnancy or parturition is associated with intrauterine infection and, more commonly, neonatal disease acquired from the
maternal
genitourinary tract. It is characterized by disseminated viremia with multisystem involvement or disease localized to the brain or skin. Eyes, and oropharynx.
